Silanized glass vials are an excellent solution when protein absorption must be avoided. The silanization process deactivates charged SiOH sites on the glass surface, limiting the hydrophobic effect.

HPLC autosampler vials are generally categorized based on vial diameter, vial height, and thread finish. Clear glass and amber glass have similar inert properties. Amber glass is used to protect sensitive samples from UV light. Markings on the vials help provide sample identification information. PTFE is the most inert but its poor resealability making it unsuitable for multiple injections or storage. For layered septa such as PTFE/silicone the chemical resistance of the septa is that of PTFE until the septum is punctured. Once punctured, the silicone layer is exposed and able to react with sample/solvent so the chemical resistance of silicone should be considered when using these septa.
